Evaluation Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

During the construction and research process of he media task I used many different types of media technologies. As I didn’t have a camera at home I used the one that the school provided. I used a Sony camera and tripod and although it wasn’t the best camera on the market it got the job done. What I really liked about the camera was the fact that it wasn’t heavy to move around and it was durable. We used the same camera throughout the shoot and it proved to be reliable as it never failed on us. I got used to using the camera and felt comfortable handling it and it also had a useful tool where you could playback the scenes you filmed.

I also used Adobe Premier Pro to edit the music video. I found this a little different to use as I had edited on final cut pro last year. What I enjoyed about using adobe premier pro was that although it was new to me and had a different look the user interface was brilliant and I found myself quickly adapting to it. I also used Adobe Photoshop and Adobe illustrator to make my digipak and magazine cover. Adobe photoshop was very troublesome to get to grips with and I watched a tutorial on YouTube to try to understand how to use it. Throughout this media task I became more adept at using different technologies but Photoshop was by far the hardest technology to get my head around.

I also used websites like wordpress.com to document my media journey and used prezi and slideshare to create electronic PowerPoint presentations that were both informational and presentable.I also used powtoon during my evaluation and so have used a wide variety of media technologies.

Evaluation Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

We watched the music video on a big screen in our college and then afterwards in class I told everyone to complete my survey on the music video. Here were the responses.

q1

As you can see 100% of the audience enjoyed the music video with no responses on the ‘I didn’t like it’ and ‘I hated it’ options. This shows me that music video was overall a hit and that the viewers came away from the experience at the very least satisfied.

q2

The camera work was well received by the viewers and the audience feedback shows me that most people were happy and there wasn’t any real sloppiness that was evident.

q3

The editing was also well recivied 60% of people giving it the highest rating of excellent. This shows me that I have done a good job in making the music video visually appealing.

q4

The mise en scene during the production was discussed very ehavily as we knew that it played a vital role in the narrative of our music video. We scoped out different locations and it took multiple visits before we eventually settled so I was happy that the additional research paid with 80% of people finding it very appealing or better.

q5

The music video narrative was very easy to understand and this was adamant at the screening as the people watching gave the music video a standing ovation. This was because of the story we told and how effectively we told it and it was pleasing to see an overwhelming 90% of finding it extremely easy to understand. Our intention wasn’t to make it mind-numbing but rather to make it engaging and we did that so I’m very happy.

q6

I was disappointed that more people wouldn’t tell their friends about our music video. The answers to this question left me a little bewildered as everything else in the survey had seemed to be going well. Upon further inspection I realised that most people were only viewing this as coursework and not an actual video and so it was a bit like asking your friends to check out your homework.

Making of Magazine Ad

After doing my research I made sure to use the same picture and stick to the theme of black and white as I wanted to create a synergy with my artist and his brand name. I also used the exact same font that I used for my digipak but I did stumble across a few problems.

2.1                                2.2

The original ‘Dead And Gone’ font was used over a black background but as I changed the size and placing of the artist name and album title on the magazine cover I realised that the white background made the ‘Dead And Gone’ undecipherable. I fixed this by using the layering style to change the contour and texture of the font to make the whites and black more prominent.

All I have left to do now is put blend the Big Ben background into my magazine advert and then put the accompanying words to describe the artist.

Making of Digipak

When I went over the OCR Media specification I knew that making the Digipak would be very hard, mainly because I’d never heard of a digipak! I’d never used Adobe Photoshop before and so the first thing I did was to watch this fantastic tutorial on YouTube and then just played about on Photoshop discovering the many different elements on offer.

The first step towards making a digipak was to take a good picture of our Main Artist which we did.

I then got decided to put a logo on the bottom left hand corner and customised it using laser style in photoshop. I went from this to this.

I decided to use a background cover of Big Ben and then change the opacity of the picture so that it could blend in to the background. I then went to http://www.dafont.com and used their free custom fonts to make the names of the artist and album. I copied and pasted the fonts then used the magic wand tool to delete the white background. As I was looking at the front cover of my digipak I still wasn’t fully satisfed so I decided to make the picture of Erick black and white. This did the trick and I was left happy with how the front turned out.

Finishing editing

Today went well and I completed the edit of the music video. Abul and I continued from where we left off and as a result of last week’s work organising the clips we went at a good pace. The only problem we had was aligning the music to the artist as he sings. I wanted to make the video look as professional as possible and so we tried to minimise any amateurish mistakes.

After we finished the rough draft of the edit we went back and watched the video. We decided to speed up some bits of the video as it better suited the music We also changed the flashback scenes to black and white so the audience is more aware of what is going on in the video.

We are pleased with how our music video has turned out but we will come back to finalise and retouch our videos if necessary.
